    Derby Dash Weekend

Come join Jason Kaplitz and Rick Miller (AAD WV) for a fun weekend in the West Virginia Panhandle town of Martinsburg

This will be the first time COG has visited the area but Rick has used the hotel for other past events and gives it a thumbs up.

Just a little over an hour west of Washington DC, where rivers meet mountains and history happens, Berkeley County WV is the perfect getaway  to explore your passions.

Home base will be the Comfort Inn Aiken Center, just off I-81 on WV-9.

We are planning on having a “bring your own” Derby Party in the hotel’s lobby! Ladies bring your best Derby Hat!

There is no event fee or set agenda for the weekend.  Ride, eat, have fun.

Here is a web link that has good resources if you're looking for things to do or see around Martinsburg:  www.travelwv.com

    All riders welcome.

    Riding & GPX Downloads

We have collected several ride route samples from Roadrunner magazine and adapted them for Martinsburg, plus a bonus alternate loop 2 provided by our WV AAD Rick Miller. In addition, there are any number of “do it yourself” possibilities; after all it is West Virginia, the home of DIY.

There are 5 GPX files available for members for download:

    • Loop 1 - Three States (174 mi)
    • Loop 2 - Ridges and Valleys (224 mi)
    • Loop 2Alt - RM Loop (190 mi + 34 mi) This include a 34 mile add-on route.
    • Loop 3 - North to Newport (220 mi)
    • Loop 4 - Great Appalachian Valley (141 mi)

These routes were prepared using Garmin Basecamp, but none were ride tested for this event. You are downloading them as-is.

RELEASE: As with any route provided, we recommend following the route on a map first. This way you will have a better idea of where you are going and have more fun doing it. Downloading and using any route file indicates you acknowledge that you agree to do so with the understanding that the Concours Owners Group (COG) cannot assume responsibility for your personal safety when using these routes. If you choose to use these routes you do so voluntarily, based on your own assessment of your abilities, route conditions, and faculties, and therefore assume all risks. Slimey Crud Run Meet & Greet

Join us and bring a friend for a meet & greet gathering on Sunday, May 5th. We will meet between 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. at the Slimey Crud Run in Pine Bluff, WI (just west of Madison).  I will park by the Cross Plains Town/Pine Bluff Hall & Community Center - Look for the green COG banner.

We'll spend an hour or so kicking tires and gawking at bikes.  At 10:30 a.m., we will head over to Grandma Mary's Cafe in Arena, WI for brunch.

Never heard of the Slimey Crud Run?  Well, the Slimey Crud Run is a bi-annual event held on the first Sundays in May and October.  The SCR has been going on for almost 50 years and is a gathering of motorcycles and motorcyclists of all brands and types.  The event starts in Pine Bluff, WI and then migrates to Leland, WI for another meet-up in the afternoon.  It's not unusual to see 1,000 or more bikes with participants from at least five states in the upper midwest.  For additional information on the Slimey Crud Run, including the history of the event, check out their website www.slimeycrudrun.com.

In addition to some great COG camaraderie, this will be a great time to discuss summer rides, COG events, and possible future meet & greets.
Can't make the SCR? Then consider meeting us for brunch at Grandma Mary's Cafe around 11:00 am.

There is no registration fee, but we're asking everyone to register online so we have an idea of how many people to expect. I hope to see you there!

From there we'll continue east to our next gas stop in Winthrop before going down to the turnoff for WA 153 and a nice ride through the Methow Valley. From there U.S. 97 will take us to Chelan for lunch at Marcela's Cocina Mexicana, 119 E Woodin Ave, Chelan, WA 98816.

After lunch we'll ride along the south shore of Lake Chelan on WA 971 before turning south to return to Alt U.S. 97 and the ride to the next gas stop in Wenatchee. The ride continues on U.S. 2 to the detour through Peshastin and Plain around Leavenworth and back to U.S. 2 for the ride over Stevens Pass and down into Sultan, where the offical ride to eat ends at the Chevron station located at 31201, US-2, Sultan, WA 98294.

      Curves to the Coast Loop

Explore scenic Oregon backroads, rural highways, with some twisty technical sections sprinkled in! This is a different route than the last two years, but a similar feel. If you're willing to ride a few hundred feet on gravel, there is even a short walk to a beautiful waterfall on our way back into town.

Meet in the parking lot of Middleton Motors at ~8:00, kickstands up at 8:30. Lunch in Astoria will be around 12:30, and the ride should end about 5:00.

This is an all-day ride (~250 miles, 8 hours) through scenic rural highways on our way to the northern part of the Oregon coast and back. We'll plan on a group lunch at the halfway point, and will be ending at a restaurant as well. Each half of the ride is about 125 miles, so plan to start the trip with a full tank, and there is a chance to refuel at the lunch stop.

There are planned stops every 60 minutes or so for photo opportunities and rest breaks. We'll split into groups of 3-5 riders as needed.

I will provide GPS files as well as a detailed list of stops and intersections.

There are several hotels available in the area for those coming from outside the area. Please reach out to Aaron if you need ideas on places to stay.

      Route Info

Google Maps route - Morning https://maps.app.goo.gl/jxALXRifetUk8omm6

After a half dozen miles on the freeway, we'll peel off onto rural highways, working our way north and west to find our way to the Columbia River, where I hope to be able to take the Cathlamet Ferry across the river - the ferry is currently closed for maintenance but it should be open by our ride, if not we'll use an alternate route.

We'll do a short loop on the Washington side of the river, then cross the longest continual truss bridge in North America, the Astoria-Megler Bridge, and find lunch in Astoria.

Google Maps route - after lunch https://maps.app.goo.gl/HEW9gPbCSknzMLSs8

After refueling ourselves and our bikes, we'll head southeast on twisty Hwy 202, stopping at Fishhawk Falls for a rest break and a short walk to the waterfall for those interested.

We'll continue on through some fun farmland roads to meet back up with Hwy 26, then make our way through Banks en route to an optional loop around Hagg Lake, then backroads to Helvetia Tavern to wrap up our trip with a fantastic burger or salad.

      ========================
      Optional Sunday ride 7/14/2024

We will be offering a re-run of our route from the prior two years for those who want to spend an extra day. Meet up location and time will be the same, Black Bear Diner, KSU @ 8:30. Additional info can be found on last year's event page, https://concours.org/event-5332684

      On to the National!

"On to the National!" is an overnight event for some that are going to the National in Flatwoods WV, want a place to stop Saturday night, and spend some fun time with other COGgers.

Our house is ~350 miles from Flatwoods, between 5 and 7 hours of riding, depending on... well you know what.

We will be serving dinner on Saturday and breakfast Sunday morning.  We can accommodate up to 15 people (bathroom and septic system limited).
We do have a guest bedroom, if a couple is interested, let me know directly so we can "reserve it" for you. We have couches and a sofabed that can sleep 3 or 4 others, and enough floorspace in the house to fit about 6-9 sleeping bags.  Our back yard is flat and our neighborhood is the definition of quiet and safe, with awesome neighbors, so pitching your tent out back is also fine.  We only have one shower, so opportunity will be very limited; please don't count on being able to take one.

While we will keep cleanup as simple as possible, we will need, and expect, help cleaning up so Irene and I can also hit the road early - we will be locking up the house and leaving at 8:30 AM.  The route we plan to take is below, and we will be happy to have others ride with us; our riding style is not scraping pegs, but not getting passed very often.  Our plan is to stop for lunch near the OH/WV state line, possibly meet other COGgers there, and make the last part to Flatwoods.

      • When: Starts Saturday Aug. 10 (no fixed time), ends Sunday Aug 11, 8:00 AM
      • What: Cookout, sleep, breakfast.
      • Fee: Donation
      • Where: home of Jorge & Irene Silva, 2642 Laddie Ct. Anderson, IN 46012 - 765-810-4396 (please text; I may not pick up calls from unknown numbers)
      • Schedule
        • Dinner Saturday 6-7:30 PM: Hamburgers & (good) Hot Dogs, Potato salad, cookies & ?? for dessert, lemonade, iced tea, water, coffee.
        • Breakfast Sunday 7-8 AM: Egg casserole, orange juice, coffee, muffins
        • Cleanup Sunday 8-8:15 AM
        • Departure Sunday 8:30 AM

        • US33 South to Arnoldsburg, WV

Being the 30th, we have a special design you will be able to order ahead of the rally and special swag to give out.  Plus, some really good prizes, ones I hope you will enjoy.  So plan for this one, we only do 30th anniversary's once in a while!

      Camping & Lodging
      Camping

Two Wheels of Suches (TWoS), also known as TWO (Two Wheels Only), has

camp sites that will have electricity available for those who need it (e.g., if you have a CPAP or a need where electricity is important to your health).  Otherwise, wide open fields, tree cover, creek view spots are all over.

You don't need to make reservations if you are tent camping as usual. TWoS is currently at $20 per night camping on the grounds.

      Cabins
TWoS also has 8 cabins available for booking.  These will go fast, if not already gone, so make your reservation as soon as possible.  Again, keep an eye on the thread as beds or cabins do come up.  Cabin rates are currently at $70 per night.

      Lodge Rooms
TWoS also has a limited number of lodge rooms available on a first come, first served basis.  Make your reservations early for a lodge room or a cabin if you don't plan to tent camp.  Mention COG when booking a cabin or lodge room.  Ditto on above, they are currently booked for the event already so if looking for one, keep an eye on the threads for someone canceling.  Lodgerates are at $80 per night.

To check on availability or make a reservation for one of the cabins or a lodge room, use TWoS' new online booking system at https://twowheelsofsuches.com/contact-us/ or call (706) 973-1671.  Plus, you can actually see a picture of our group on their home page during one of our banquets!  How cool are we?

      RV Parking
There is limited RV parking but NO hookups at TWoS.  If you need/want hookups, there are other camping resorts nearby.  Please google those.

      Registration/Fees
Registration fee is $35.00 for COG Members/Associate Members, and $45.00 for guests and non-members (including Forum-Only subscribers).

When you arrive, look for the COG check in point on the deck to the left of the lodge.  At check-in, you will receive a wristband that will be needed for the banquet dinner on Saturday.  And a couple goodies to carry home in your saddle bag.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Registration closes at 11:59 pm (EDT) on August 23, 2024. This is so Skip, Carol and the team at TWoS can plan, order and get the food for us.

      Cancellation/Refund Policy
Cancellations must be received no later than Friday, August 30, 2024 by emailing events@concours.org. There will be no refunds for cancellations received after August 30, 2024.

      NE 2024 State Capitol Rally - September 19 - 22

The rumor of the COG NE Fall Rally’s demise has been greatly exaggerated! The location will be East Greenbush, NY, and this is known as the “Capitol Region” of NY. It is on the east side of the Hudson River on the outskirts of the state capitol, Albany.

Come join us for what is sure to be a great event. If you weren't able to make it to the national rally and need a little rally fix, or you're simply raging against the dying of the light and want one last hurrah before the cold of winter sets in, we’re here for you.

The hotel location is walkable to a Denny's or a Cracker Barrel, and a myriad of food delivery options are available (update your phone apps – ask your grandkids). Also, the hotel has a 24/7 “market” in the lobby for purchase of beverages and snacks.

East Greenbush gives you access to a number of great riding areas – North and Northwest into “upstate” NY, and the southern Adirondacks, East to the Berkshires or Vermont, Southwest into the Catskill Mountain range, or Southeast into Northern Connecticut, as well as access to the entire picturesque Hudson Valley.

A special feature this year (and it may be a first) will be a 135-mile Dual Sport/ADV route, so bring your ADV bikes and have a blast.

Bridge of Flowers: The Bridge of Flowers is in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, connecting the towns of Shelburne and Buckland. The seasonal footbridge – once a trolley bridge – has a garden of flowers covering it. It is only open between April and October. Check out the web site for more information.

Old Man Jeff’s Barbecue Company:  This is a newly opened BBQ joint in Pittsfield MA that has been getting good reviews. Their website says they are operating limited hours, so call ahead.

Zack & Lou’s Barbecue: This is a terrific BBQ joint on the north side of Torrington, CT. The brisket and pulled chicken are very good.

      Sierra Sidewinder - Feather River

We’re mixing things up a bit for the 2024 Sierra Sidewinder, this year taking it to the northern limits of the mountain range to ride the epic roads in the Feather River region south of Mt. Lassen.

We will be riding out of a base in the quaint mountain town of Brownsville and planning ride loops on highway 70 north to Lake Almanor and then back south through Quincy and onto Hwy 162.
We are also eyeing a loop east to Graeagle, then back west and south on 49.
As usual with the Sidewinder, we’ll find some unique places to eat and grab refreshments.

      Lodging

For lodging on Sept. 20 and 21, we have secured ALL 14 rooms at the Brownsville Motel. The have a variety of room sizes and configurations, but

for COG, they are setting all rooms at $95 per night plus tax for cash, a fewdollars more if you use a credit card. They take a $50 deposit against damage. Know that the room rate is a $30-$50 per night discount off their online rate and is only available if you call them at 530-675-2480 and tell them you are with COG. But don’t delay, because there are only 14 rooms and it’s the only motel in town.

Following lunch, riders typically break into smaller groups and plan a route through a variety of great roads in the heart of the driftless area in southwestern Wisconsin, with the final destination being the Don Q Inn in Dodgeville, WI.

If you can't make the banquet Saturday night, but you have time for a day ride, or you just want to meet the group, kick some tires, share tall tales, etc., consider meeting us at the Sparta Family Restaurant around Noon on Saturday to say hello and maybe ride a little with one of the groups after lunch.
